PELHAM, Leonard Peter

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Leonard Peter Pelham, age 78, of Herring Cove, on March 16, 2020, in Northwood Ivany Place. Born in Halifax on August 18, 1941, he was a son of the late Leonard and Doris (McDonald) Pelham. Upon graduation from Vocational School in Halifax, he began a career in the Royal Canadian Air Force that took him to Saskatchewan, Ontario, and New Brunswick. After spending a short time in California, he returned home and began a lengthy career with CBC as a cameraman. It was here that he met many of his lifelong friends, including the love of his life, Helen. A true sportsman, he enjoyed and excelled at many sports, including rowing, sailing, scuba diving, golf, hockey, fly-fishing and skiing. Later in life he turned to spectator, cheering on his nephew Luke while he played in the QMJHL, and then the SMU Huskies as they chased CIS gold. He also spent countless hours working to help better his community over the years as a member of the Herring Cove Ratepayers Association. Known to many as Peter, he also answered to dad, uncle Peter, and more recently, papa. He truly enjoyed spending time with children, whether it was coaching minor hockey, teaching local children to fly-fish, shuttling his son, Stephen, to hockey games, ski races and golf tournaments, taking nieces and nephews skiing and other places, or most recently, spending time with his grandsons. He cherished this time, vacationing with them, having them spend time at gramma and papa's, and watching them play sports, even venturing out to watch Jack's last playoff game this year. Peter is survived by his son, Stephen (Janine); grandchildren, Jack, and Simon; brothers, Michael (Lynn), Rick (Eileen), Cliff (Gina), Stephen (Sheleagh); sisters, Cathy Faulkner, and Susan McKenzie; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and his wife, Helen. His family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Ivany Place for their extensive personal care over the last few months. Arrangements were handled by J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Visitation, funeral, and burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to KidSport Nova Scotia.
