John became a member of the PT Cadre in the 50s as an extra-regimentally employed officer from the Canadian Provost Corps.  He later reclassified to the PSPT(PER). He first served as Central Command F&RO and later as a Staff Officer of DPERA in NDHQ, Ottawa. He retired in 1970 and became the executive secretary of the Canadian Water Ski Association in Ottawa.
