Ernie served with the RCAF during WW2 and in 1953 , as a member of the Supplementary reserve in the rank of S/L, he was involved with W/C John Tett in setting up the RCAF Recreation Specialist Branch. In 1954 he became a civilian Deputy Head of Recreation and Research at RCAF HQ and remained in that position until his retirement in 1963
