Raised in Toronto, Herb completed a year at U of T, then joined the RCN as an OS in 1946, then went on to Officer Trg in the UK in 1947. He served on HURON in Korea; then QUEBEC; attended P&RT Course in 1952 and became OIC Naden P&RT School; at sea on ONTARIO; then RRMC; Stadacona; BONADVENTURE; Cornwallis; JONQUIERE; NEW GLASGOW; Marpac; NDHQ; Norfolk VA, USA then back to Marpac. He retired in 1975 as a LCdr and lived in Sidney BC where he worked with Canada Trust; was an Alderman of Sidney Council; chaired the Saanich Water Board, then became a professional golf caddy for 10 years. At age 71 he decided to stay at home and worked on his own game. He passed away at home in Aug 2002 in Sidney.
