Tommy was a member of the Canadian Guards and transferred to the Army PT Cadre in the late 1950s. With the imminent implementation of unification Tommy decided to retire from the PTS(RCIC).  During 1957-58 Tom was the Canadian Welterweight Boxing champion and in 1958 he was voted as the Most Outstanding Boxer in Canada. Because of these achievements he was inducted into the CF Sports Hall of Fame.
