FORMER RCAF REC SPEC: PATRICK "RED" SHETLER OBITUARY

Patrick “Red” Shetler

We sadly announce the passing of this incredible man on October 4, 2024.

He was born April 24, 1933. Loving husband to Patricia (Ms. Pat); father to Patsy Shacklady (late Jim) and Lynn Maier (Chuck); grandfather to Jamie (deceased), Trisha Maier and Tanya Maier; great grandfather to Adele Bredin; older brother and only sibling of the late Jeanette Russell (Dave); brother in law to Susan Price (Al) and Carol Quattrocchi (Joe); dear friend of former business partner Jean Muehlen.

Pat’s life was far from ordinary. As a young man he ran the Boston Marathon twice. He was a physical fitness instructor with the Royal Canadian Air Force until he secured his dream job as a lineman in the NHL back in the days of good old hockey with players like Bobby Orr, Tim Horton and Gordie Howe. He was also a TV play-by-play broadcaster for the Philadelphia Flyers. Hockey was in his blood and he always kept ties in various capacities, even as a colourman for the Norfolk Admiral’s radio broadcast for 25 years, into his 80’s. His other passion was umpiring baseball, his strike call was always loud and clear. He was also a talented artist and was a co-owner of a very successful sign company, Admiral Signworks, in Virginia Beach for over 40 years.

Pat will be missed by his friends and acquaintances in Virginia Beach, Pungo, Tobacco Row Estates in Monroe, Virginia, as well as in Blue Rocks and Sydney, Nova Scotia where he was raised, and in Alliston, Ontario where he formerly lived.
