HISTORY OF THE PERISCOPE.
In March of 1969 while working in DPERA, Jerry Kasanda prepared and mailed out to all members a precis type of informal bulletin called PERI-851-SCOPE. The bulletin was later produced professionally through DPERA and eventually emerged as the professional journal of the Canadian Forces Physical Education and Recreation (PE&R) Branch (Disbanded) and was titled the PERISCOPE. In addition to articles written by PEROs and PERIs on current topics related to PE&R, it contained announcements that were of common interest to PE&R members and contained a list of course graduates, promotions and a location list of all serving members. It was dissolved after we were disbanded.
Under the guidance of Lee Roberge the web site version was created on 14 Oct 1998 by Lee Roberge and Brian Harrison, then maintained solely by Lee until 2004 when Joe Beauchene, John Waller and Ken MacDonald collectively revised and re-created the next version with Herb MacAulay acting as the finance member. When John (2010) and Joe (2013) passed away, Ken was left to fend for himself until 2015 when Brian Harrison volunteered to be an Editor and Shannon Boivin took over the finances from Herb. In 2017 we discovered that our software program was no longer available, which meant that the only ones who could edit and maintain the site were Brian and Ken. For medical reasons, Brian had to retire from the site in 2017. As a result of a mass mail out e-mail plea from Ken (at 85 years of age) to all members for assistance, Dan Girard stepped forward as a volunteer and because of his experience as a web manager, has created a more modern interactive design that permits all members to edit and update the site. Additional editorial assistance was found when Randy Cousineau and Jurgen Kirsten volunteered to assist with the new www.thenewperiscope.com site, which is still a work in progess.
