BACKGROUND
The "vierdaagse" (Dutch for "Four day Event") is an annual walk that has taken place since 1909, being based at Nijmegen since 1916. Depending on age group and category, walkers have to walk 30, 40 or 50 kilometers each day for four days. Originally a military event with a few civilians, it now is a mainly civilian event. Numbers have risen in recent years, with over 40,000 taking part - including about 5,000 Military. It is now the world's largest walking event. Due to crowds on the route, since 2004 the organisers have limited the number of participants. Those who complete the march receive the 'Vierdaagse Cross', an official Dutch decoration that can be worn on a Dutch uniform. Many participants take part every year, including several that have taken part in 50, and even 60 different annual marches. The first day of walking is always the 3rd Tuesday in July.
Each day of the marches is named after the biggest town it goes through. Tuesday is the day of Elst, Wednesday the day of Wijchen, Thursday the day of Groesbeek and Friday the day of Cuijk. The routes always stay the same unless there is a specific need to change, as it did in 2007 (route changed in 2006 but cancelled) when the walkers went through the Waalkade on Wednesday for the first time since the original route got too crowded and walkers had to wait for over an hour at some times. 2006 was the first year to be cancelled in 90 years (apart from WW II). After the first day's march there were thousands of drop-outs and two deaths because of extreme heat.
On the Friday, as participants near the finish, the public awards the walkers with Gladioli. A symbol of force and victory stemming from Roman times where gladiators where showered with Gladioli, the Nijmegen walkers are similarly 'showered' in flowers on their arrival. The entry into the city and towards the finish, the St. Annastreet, is for that reason called Via Gladiola during the Nijmegen Marches.

Carole Groleau Oh my...great memories, flying down Mt Baker w my Bike as part of this team...on this Sea to Ski Race in the USA. This was our team... 1st person, Bobby Smith hopped into his X-country ski boots & skied to the top of the downhill slalom to pass the baton...or whatever it was...that I cant remember as yes it was a while back....early 80.s. Then, Eddie Boisjolie slalomed downhill w his Dynastar skis, then passed the baton to John Carr, who ran...I believe it was 8-10 km km...still going downhill, then passed me the baton, to bike...like 20 or so km, I then passed the baton to Carl Simms & Coco Cote...(take a close look at the pics...coco is on his toes..LOL) where they canoed like far, far down this river then they finished off by passing the baton to the last 2 guys of the team, Norm Banfield and Oh my,,,sorry I cant remember his partners name...anyways they sailboat tacking across the lake to the finish line. Another one of the many great memories that I will forever cherish from the Chilliwack PERI...

BERMUDA EXPEDITION 1993

The purpose of that Adventure Training Expedition was to provide the Bermuda Maritime Museum with an Underwater Archaeological Field School to conduct a series of site surveys of known and potential 17th and 18th century shipwrecks. The conducting staff included a professional Parks Canada Underwater Archaeologist, a Canadian Forces Hyperbaric Medicine Specialist Officer, an Expedition Leader certified by Parks Canada through the Nautical Archaeological Society (NAS) as a Tutor-Trainer Instructor (me), 3 NAS team leaders and the team members earning their entry level one NAS certification.
There were three previous Underwater Archaeological Expeditions to support the Bermuda Maritime Museum shipwreck survey program in cooperation with Parks Canada, all conducted by the (NDHQ) Forces Sub Aqua Club (FSAC) and two further ones to conduct underwater archaeological NAS training for the Bermuda Sub Aqua Club, an affiliate of the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC). (NAS is the BSAC underwater archaeological division of BSAC). The basic NAS training for the FSAC was conducted by Save Ontario Shipwrecks (SOS), as part of its NAS provincial training program.
Note: In addition to those four expeditions to Bermuda, I conducted 3 basic and one advanced scuba training courses for the Canadian Airborne Regiment in Montego Bay, Jamaica....2 basic scuba courses for the Canadian Contingent in Cyprus, 2 basic scuba courses for the Canadian contingent in UNEF II in Egypt, one basic scuba course for the Canadian contingent in UNDOF in the Golan and one basic scuba course for the RAF (Military Police) Unit in Malta and an advanced police diver underwater forensics course for the Bermuda Marine Police Underwater Search and Recovery Team.
